Bio

Funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Chapel of the Valley in Hillsboro for Bertha O. Bump of Hillsboro. She was the widow of a Hillsboro attorney, Mark Bailey Bump, who practiced there for 52 years. Rev. Ken Simonda of First United Methodist Church in Hillsboro will officiate and burial will be in Forest View Cemetery. Mrs. Bump died January 11 at Tuality Community Hospital following a short illness. She was born June 8, 1891 at Bluff Dale, Texas, the daughter of Alsom and Annie Souther. She came to Oregon with her parents at the age of 12 and was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy. She was married to Mr. Bump in November, 1916 at Portland. He died in 1951. She had worked as a receptionist and had also been her husband's secretary for a time. Mrs. Bump was a member of the Hillsboro First United Methodist Church, the WCCU and Coffee Club of the church. Two daughters, Mrs. DeLaurice Sherman of Salem and Mrs. Vivian Forbes of Ventura, California survive as do a brother, Elba Souther of Portland; a sister Kittie Volz of Scio; grandsons Jerry Miller of Placerville, California and Ronnie Miller of Tigard and three great-granddaughters. A daughter Cloyce Bump died in 1967. Funeral arrangements were under direction of Forest Grove Memorial Chapel. [Forest Grove News Times, 14 Jan 1971]
