Bio

Melba Ruth Linthicum, 81, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2012. Service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 1, at Waco Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow immediately after the service at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Melba Ruth Bailey was born in Waco, Texas, to the late Ted and Millie Bailey. She married Bill Linthicum on May 16, 1953. Melba loved life and always knew a little something about everyone and would share that with you whether you knew that person or not. She loved her pets, especially Missy and had a special knack for feeding baby birds. Melba never cared for sports, except for car racing and Richard Petty. But the past few years, she became a huge fan of the Dallas Mavericks, Texas Rangers, Lady Bears, RGIII and Dallas Cowboys. She would put us to shame with her knowledge of the stats and information about the players, being a "newbie" to sports fandom. Melba was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion, loved shuffleboard, and worked as a volunteer at the Animal Birth Control Clinic for several years. She was also very proud of what we call her "groupie" photos. Some of these photos were with Hank Williams (the real one), Ike, yes, "the president", John Wayne, yes "the Duke", Johnnie Weismuller, yes, "Tarzan", Lefty Frizzell, the country western singer and many more. Melba survived the Waco tornado of 1953, when she worked for Williams Drug Store and worked as a DJ at the Alico Building. Melba also loved her 1969 Dodge Charger RT and would joke she used it to "pick up guys" because many times when she drove it, young men would follow her to try and get her to sell it to them. Melba's minute details about people we didn't know, newspaper clippings about people "we should have known" who had passed on, but did not know and her unique love of life will be sorely missed. "We love you, Mother. " She is survived by her beloved husband of nearly 59 years, Billy Joe; children, Viki Ruth, Gary Joe and wife, Janet, and Diane Melba and husband, Greg; grandchildren, Billy and Mari, Chris and Katrina, Kindle and Jared, Lindsey and Larry, Brad, Bailey and Tyler; and great-grandchildren, Cooper and Eli; sisters, JoAnne and Blanche; nieces and nephews; her "adopted children", Jonelle, Vickie, Mark, Dyron, Bobby and Shawnell, who worked for them at the Dairy Queen and Melba thought of them as part of her family, and numerous friends.
