Shiner Gazette Shiner, Texas • Thu, Jun 30, 1966 Page 1 Funeral services were held in Baytown Tuesday, May 31, 1966 For Mr. and Mrs. John Emmette Smith of Austin, TX who were killed in a car accident Saturday, May 28, 1966 The crash occurred on Loop 111, which was opened to traffic Friday, May 27, 1966 Mr. and Mrs. Smith and their three children were in route to Corpus Christi for a weekend outing. They were driving a 1965 Volkswagen when it was in a head on collision with a Renault Dauphine convertible driven by Miss Windy L. Williams, about 20, who was also killed in the accident. Miss Williams was the daughter of the deputy commander of operations at Bergstrom Air Force, Austin. All three of the Smith children received broken bones and other injuries and at the last report were all hospitalized. John Emmette Smith was born at Houston October 10, 1930, the son of Emmett and Bessie (Petru) Smith. At the time of his death he had reached the age of 35 years, 7 months and 18 days. He resided with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Elo Berger on Route 1, Shiner from 1938 to 1940. Mr. Smith served in the air force during the Korean War and held the rank of captain when he received his discharge. At present he was a service installation engineer for Texas Nuclear Corporation. Mr. Smith was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was married to Barbara Maxine Outhouse. The couple has three children, Pamela Sue, 13, Michael Lindsey, 11, and Mitchell Emmette, 7, who survive. In addition to the children he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Bessie G. Smith of Baytown; his father, Emmett Smith; and one sister, Mrs. Archie (Annette) Reynolds of Baytown. Mrs. Smith, nee Barbara Maxine Outhouse, was born in Baytown, January 27, 1934. Her life span covered 32 years, 4 months and one day. Besides her three children she is survived by her mother, Mrs. Vera Graham of Baytown; her father, Ray Outhouse of Sulpher, Louisiana and two sisters, Mrs. Paul Krolczyk and Mrs. Glenda Orton, both of Baytown. Among those attending the funeral of Mr. and Mrs. Smith in Baytown were Mr. and Mrs. John H. Petru and Mrs. Agnes Shimek of Shiner; Mr. and Mrs. Jim Petru of Corpus Christi; Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Petru of Gonzales; Mr. and Mrs. Elo Berger, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Hoepfl, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Berger and Johnny Caka, all of Houston. To all who knew and loved them, and to their immediate family and near relatives, we extend sincerest sympathy.
