FAIRLEY JAMES CHANCE "Curley" Of Falls Church, VA, passed away at his home on December 25, 2008. "Curley", as friends and family called him, was preceded in death by his former wife, Wilma Lee Chance, of Victoria, TX; parents James [Alexander] and Frances [Johnson] Chance; sister Molly Chance; and a brother Neal Chance, all of Laurinburg, NC; and a brother, Waddus Chance of St. Cloud, FL. Curley started working as a young apprentice carpenter after moving to Arlington, VA. He was eager to join the carpenters union. He joined the Carpenters Union Local 132 on October 13, 1959. He felt compelled to encourage strong support of the union to preserve the quality of craftsmanship, fair wage standards and health benefits to skilled craftsmen. As a professional interior trim and finish carpenter, his life's work in the union is present all over the Washington, DC area in high end retail stores, offices, hotels, etc. His most rewarding career moment was a project at the home of Mrs. Ethel Kennedy in the 1960's. Surviving Mr. Chance are daughters Frances Chance Hansen and husband, Charles, USA, and daughter Karen Chance Slusher, husband Jeff; and three grandchildren of Inez, TX. Funeral arrangements were provided by Arlington Funeral Home, Arlington, VA, with burial services at Columbia Gardens, Arlington, VA. [The Washington Post, February 8, 2009.]
