Bio

Myra Lee Wilhelm went suddenly to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Jan. 11, from her home in Tehachapi. Myra was born on Aug. 11, 1919, in Ramah, Colo., to Cornelius and Eva Hall. She was the youngest of seven children. She had five sisters and one brother. Her sister, Doris Adkins, 96, of Tehachapi, is now the only surviving member of the Hall family. From a young age, the Hall girls learned to help out on the ranch. Myra's grandchildren have enjoyed many stories about her early years there, including close encounters with coyotes, rattlesnakes and an angry bull. Myra incorporated many of these adventures into a children's book, Lambs and Lambs Quarters, which is still in print, and teaches valuable lessons about family and lives lived to please Jesus. After high school graduation and some college Myra spent a year teaching with her sister in a one-room school in Colorado. She then moved to Los Angeles where she attended school and graduated with a degree in commercial art. She worked in this profession for a short time before marrying John Wilhelm and settling down to raise a family of five children. John first worked as a chemist for Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica, and later left this position to establish a business producing a soil fumigant, which has greatly benefited the strawberry industry. Myra used her graphic arts skills to design the logo for the business, the office buildings, and several of the homes they lived in. John and Myra also opened a Christian bookstore in Buena Park, which provided Christian literature, Bibles, and gift items for more than 20 years. It was their desire to provide Christian art work and scripture verses for their customers. Myra spent her hours at the store painting custom pieces. She thoroughly enjoyed her work. During this time, she also wrote articles for a Sunday school periodical. In 2002, the family business moved to Mojave and the Wilhelm family moved to Tehachapi. John's health had failed. Myra spent the next two years caring for him in their home until he died. She was able to stay in her own home the rest of her life. Myra is survived by five children; Mary (David) Murray, Virginia (Bob) Radebaugh, James (Barbara) Wilhelm, John H. (Becky) Wilhelm, and Steve (Pam) Wilhelm; 11 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren. Visitation will be on Tuesday, Jan. 17, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Wood Family Funeral Service, Tehachapi. Burial will be Friday, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m. at Forest Lawn, Cypress. Wood Family Funeral Service has been entrusted with her care. Courtesy The Tehachapi News
