Eleanor Mae Harrifeld, 84, of Lincoln died at Tabitha Journey House in Lincoln on Thursday morning, April 5, 2012. She was born on Jan. 27, 1928, at Swanton and attended Swanton Public Schools where she graduated in May of 1945. She attended Nebraska Wesleyan for three years to obtain her teaching certificate. She began her teaching career in McCook and Fairmont. She returned to Swanton where she taught grades 6 through 8. On May 22, 1953, she married Bernard "Ben" L. Harrifeld at the Swanton United Methodist Church and they lived in Beatrice, Fairbury and Swanton as well as Cincinnati where Bernard attended the Cincinnati School of Embalming. They moved to York in 1960. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in York where she taught Sunday School and was involved with the school PTA. In 1965, they moved to Lincoln. She worked at K-Mart as a payroll clerk and at the front desk. Every Christmas she organized the "Giving Tree" which distributed gifts to numerous charitable organizations. She enjoyed cooking, potlucks and reunions. Her biggest passion was gardening. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Dennis Dekle of Lincoln; two sons, Curtis Harrifeld and Brian Harrifeld both of Lincoln; beloved sister, Mary Ann Jaros of Lincoln; brother-in-law, Earl King of Nebraska City; sister-in-law, Gladys Ruhnke of Jansen; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Sylvia Zednik Zeleny; her husband Bernard "Ben" L. Harrifeld who died on Sept. 15, 2002; one sister, Rose Marie Zeleny. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 10, at 11 a.m. at the Swanton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lori Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Swanton Cemetery of Swanton. The body will lie in state at Roper and Sons Funeral Home in Lincoln from noon until 8 p.m. Saturday; then at the Fox Funeral Home of Plymouth from noon until 8 p.m. on Monday; and at the church one hour preceding the services on Tuesday. A family prayer service will be held at 10:45 a.m. at the church on Tuesday. A memorial has been established to family's choice.
