A rural Gresham couple killed in the blizzard Wednesday were literally inches from life, a relative said Friday. The 20th and 21st Nebraska fatalities in this week's blizzard were Mr. and Mrs. Gold Dey, both 58, who farmed a half mile northeast of Gresham. Their deaths and the deaths of two men by heart attacks place the blizzard's fatality record at one more than the death count in the 55-day series of snow and blizzards in 1949. In addition, two storm deaths occurred in the Mar. 3-5 storm this year. The Dey car was found in a ditch about 1,000 feet from the house. Mr. Dey was turning into their driveway. He missed by inches. Would they have survived if they had made the driveway? "Yes, I believe so," said Archie Dey of Gresham, Mr. Dey's brother. He said he found his brother 300 feet from the car in a milo field. He and his wife also found Mrs. Dey on the porch of the home. Mrs. Dey had crawled so far from the car her slacks had come off before she collapsed on the porch, apparently too weak to open the door. Other survivors of the Deys include sons, Ronald of Shelby and Vernon of Lincoln, and a daughter, Mrs. Dennis Hankel of Waco.
