Bio

Obit. Leonard Graphic 30 Apr 1948 Bonham - Roy Smith, about 48 years of age, was found hanging by a rope from a rafter in the barn at his home on Highway 78, south of Bonham, shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday. Sheriff Dick Wait said that Smith had wrapped a rope around his neck and leaped from the rafter, breaking his neck at the base of the skull. Sheriff Wait, Deputy Sheriff J. O. McKissack and Justice of Peace W. F. Keeton held an inquest with Judge Keeton returning a verdict of suicide. Smith had been engaged in farming for a number of years. For some time, he served as night clerk at the Alexander Hotel on the southeast corner of the square. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bennie Smith and the following brothers and sisters, Semple Smith, Ladonia; Collie Smith, Three-P; Mrs. Chester Jones, Mrs. Dees, Tom Smith and Clarence Smith. Smith's body was found by his wife, who became apprehensive when he did not return to the house after going out the back door about 30 minutes previously. Funeral arrangements with Wise in charge are incomplete.
