Mother Malinda Walker Gonzales Inquirer Slayden, Feb. 11, 1902 Dr. E W. English Passes Away The numerous friends of E. W. English were grieved to learn of his passing Friday evening Dec. 10, at 8 o'clock at the City Sanitarium, although his death was not unexpected. Dr. English lingered in practically an unconscious condition almost ever since he was found in his office last Monday morning suffering from the effects of what physicians belived to be an overdose of morphine. A note was found expressing his last wishes and giving instructions as to his burial, ect. He had been in ill health for some time, although he seemed to be recuperating from a serious operation performed at San Antonio some time back in the summer. He was 53 years of age and was a native of Adamsville, Tenn., coming out to Texas 29 years ago and setting at Slayden, where he had been practicing medicine ever since. He was the oldest physician in point of service on the Sap railway, having held the position of railroad surgeon ever since coming to Slayden. Surviving him is a sister, Mrs. Layton, living at Gorman, Texas. As to whether he had any other relatives is not known. Dr. English numbered friends by the scores and in and about Slayden he was held in the highest esteem as a true friend and enjoyed the reputation of being an excellent physician, one ever ready to respond to the call of illness, and also where ever there was distress or trouble, giving most liberally of his talents and means to relieve suffering and distress, thus winning in the hearts of the residents of that section and surrounding country a warm place, and his memory will be tenderly cherished by many whom he befriend. He was a member of the Gonzales County Medical Association and was held in high esteem by his fellow members as a skilled practitioner. Everything possible was done to save his life, but to no avail. The remains of Dr. E. W. English were laid to rest in the City Cemetery Saturday at 11 o'clock. Numerous friends gathered at Kleine's undertaking parlors to escort the remains to the cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. H. M. Ratliff, pastor of the First Methodist Church of this city, in the presence of many friends of the decedent from Slayden and other points who had come to pay his memory a last tribute. A number of pretty floral offerings made lovely the new-made grave. Acting as pall-bearers were J. E. Parker, C. W. Brothers, J. C. Barfield, J. W. McWilliams, L. A. Whittlesay and G. W. Jackson
