Bio

FARMINGTON Joseph A. Palmer Dec. 3, 1923 - March 14, 2012 Joe was born Dec. 3, 1923, in Farmington, the 10th child of James M. Palmer and Camera Burnham Palmer. Joe served as an Army Sergeant in World War II, in the Pacific Theater in New Caledonia, where he met his wife, Dorothy, who was a nurse. He also served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Korean War as a JAG officer in El Paso and Killeen, Texas. In 1951, he graduated cum laude from the University of San Francisco, with a Doctorate in Law. After graduation, he and Dorothy returned to Farmington, where he went into practice with his brother, Murray Palmer. When Murray died in 1960, he went into partnership with Reed Frost and practiced law for many years at Palmer and Frost. Toward the end of his career, he retired from private practice and worked exclusively for Citizens Bank as attorney for the Trust Department. After 50 years of practicing law, he retired at age 80 and moved to Mesa, Ariz., to live with his daughter and enjoy being with the many grandchildren and great-grandchildren living there. Throughout his life he served in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in many callings including Stake Sunday School President, Ward and Stake Executive Secretary and as a member of the High Council. Joe earned his pilot's license and enjoyed flying all across the West in his own Piper airplane. He also enjoyed sailing on Morgan Lake and playing tennis, racquet ball and volleyball with his many friends. He was known for his great ability for constructing complicated sprinkler systems and enjoyed putting them in for his friends and two church buildings free of change, just for fun. Joe was a sweet and generous husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Wright Palmer; eight brothers; and one sister. He is survived by his son, Lawrence C. Palmer; daughter, Sharon C. Check; 13 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Farmington First Ward, 1310 E. 25th St. in Farmington. Interment will be at Memory Gardens, 6917 E. Main St. in Farmington, with military honors by VFW Post No. 2182 of Farmington. Arrangements are with Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute St. in Farmington, 505-325-8688. Published in Farmington Daily Times from March 16 to March 17, 2012
