Bio

William "Willie" Pokorny, age 89, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle, went to his Heavenly home on March 13, 2012. He was born on a farm near Taylor on Aug. 17, 1922, to Joe M. and Frieda (Strnad) Pokorny. He married Pearl Evelyn Schernik on February 9, 1947, at St. John Lutheran Church in Thrall. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941-47. He was a lifetime member of the Taylor VFW Post 4476 and was a past commander of the post, lifetime member of the DAV and member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Taylor. He was a parts manager for 37 years for Ford auto dealerships in Taylor and Elgin, loved fishing, enjoyed gardening, playing dominoes and Tarocks, and being with family and friends. Upon his retirement, he was so proud to be a fulltime grandpa transporting his grandkids and their friends to and from school and all sport activities, and he was their biggest fan. He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son, David Wayne Pokorny, seven brothers and one sister. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Pearl Pokorny; daughter Jessica Schmidt and husband David of Taylor; three grandchildren, Erin Supak and husband, Rudy of Caldwell; Jordan Schmidt and wife Peggy of Tyler; Joanna Schmidt of Denton; one great-granddaughter, Lila Kate Supak; and four sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. Family visitation will be held 6-8 p.m., Friday, March 16, at Condra Funeral Home in Taylor. Services will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, March 17, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Taylor followed by graveside service at Taylor City Cemetery. The family wishes to express its gratitude to Regency Manor and Odyssey Hospice of Temple for the love and support that they gave to Willie.
