Bio

This biography is compiled from histories and newspaper articles found on familysearch.org: Colleen Rose Marrott was born at the American Fork, Utah hospital, August 23, 1934 to Thelma Rose Varney and William Robert Marrott. She is the second of two daughters born to the Marrotts. Her older sister is Dawna Mae. Colleen's childhood was spent in Pleasant Grove, Utah where she attended elementary school and high school. In high school, she was active in drama and sports. She was especially good at tennis. Colleen was energetic and not afraid of work. While in high school she worked at the Pleasant Grove Cannery, working many shifts until after midnight. In her junior year of high school she began working at the Bank of Pleasant Grove, later working at Walker Bank in Provo to support herself through college. She majored in Accounting at Brigham Young University. The summer between her junior and senior years at college, Colleen was a participant in the Hill Cumorah Pageant. While there she met a missionary from southern Utah, Jerry Coy Roundy. They met again in the library at BYU shortly after his release. Six months later, they married on September 11, 1957 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. Colleen and Jerry became parents to four children: Melanie, Marie, Scott, and Alana. After Jerry's graduation from BYU, they moved to Ashton, Idaho where Jerry was hired to teach seminary. They lived in Ashton for five years. Jerry was then hired at Church College of Hawaii (now BYU-Hawaii) to teach and be Chairman of the Religion Department. They lived in Hawaii from 1965 to 1971. Colleen was busy with her family, but excited at the opportunity to work at the Laie Bank. She became Assistant Manager. She held positions in the Church, teaching in the auxiliaries, supporting her husband as Bishop of a college ward, and serving in the Stake Relief Society Presidency. In 1971 Jerry was hired at Ricks College (now BYU-Idaho) to teach in the Religion Department. They moved to Rexburg, Idaho and Colleen went to work at Valley Bank. Ricks College recruited her to work for them. In 1975 she began working in the Ricks College Accounting office. She was so good at her job, it wasn't long before she was in supervisory positions. She was finally appointed head of the Cashier's Office and became the first female administrator at Ricks College. She was also a popular speaker for young women's groups on campus. In 1983 she became the first recipient of the Ricks College Outstanding Administrator Award. In 1978 Colleen was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a mastectomy, she underwent six months of chemotherapy. The cancer came back in the chest wall and she underwent six weeks of daily radiation until she was burnt so bad her chest was a oozing mass of blood and sores. During this time Colleen never stopped serving her family, her church, or the community, and you could find her at work almost every day. She became a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and would help women get through the shock and the despair of a cancer diagnosis. Some days she would pull herself off the couch when she was so weak she could hardly stand and in immense pain, go to the hospital to help someone else, listening and reassuring the other woman without ever letting on how she was feeling. She also spent many hours on the phone listening and encouraging others. The cancer came back four times. The last time it moved into her liver. In the early morning hours of February 25, 1985, Colleen slipped away leaving a devastated family and many friends grieving. Colleen was so highly regarded by her peers and by all with whom she associated. Surviving Colleen was her husband, Jerry, her children: Melanie (Klay) Kunz, Maria (Gordon) Hudson, Scott Roundy (who was serving an LDS Mission in Sicily), and Alana Roundy; also, her parents and her sister of Pleasant Grove, Utah, and four grandchildren.
