Passed away Sunday, February 26, 2012. He was born on the 4th of July, 1925, at the family farm near Prague, one of eight children of Frank Egr, Jr. and Mary (Vanek) Egr. He was named after his uncle, Charles J. Egr, who died during combat in World War I. He attended School District 84 at Plasi, Nebraska, and then worked on the family farm. Charles was drafted into the U.S. Army on July 24, 1944. He served in Company E, 96th Infantry Division, of the 10th Army as a marksman. Gravely wounded in the RyuKyu Campaign on Okinawa in April 1945, he spent seven months at Bushnell General Hospital, Brigham City Utah, with both legs paralyzed. After months of intensive therapy, he was released, able to walk with the use of canes. He once said, "Every step I took was like having an ax chopping at my leg. But there was no way I was returning home on a stretcher." He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Campaign Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Victory Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon and Good Conduct Ribbon. Charles married June A. Voboril of Prague on November 20, 1947 at St. John Catholic Church in Prague. His parents transferred a small farm west of Prague to Charles and June as a wedding gift. Local friends continue to farm the land for the family, as his war injuries prevented him from returning to farming. They bought the drug store in Prague while June taught school at a local country school. He obtained his high school diploma and then moved to Lincoln to pursue a business degree. After returning to Prague he worked at the U.S. Post Office for two years until accepting an assistant position for the Saunders County Clerk in Wahoo in 1958. He and June built a house just south of Wahoo in the summer of 1964, the same year that Bishop Neumann High School opened. Many nieces and nephews from around the county stayed at the house while attending Neumann. He was elected Saunders County Clerk in 1968 and re-elected to six consecutive terms, serving a total of 34 years in the office. He was unopposed in all but his first election campaign. Charlie was named County Official of the Year in 1985 by the Nebraska Association of County Officials. He served on then Secretary of State Allen Beermen's Commission to rewrite Nebraska election laws. He also served as the campaign Treasurer for former state senator and Speaker of the Legislature, Curt Bromm of Wahoo. After his retirement, he enjoyed tending to his yard, driving to Prague to check on the farm, volunteering at the Lincoln Veteran's Hospital and the Saunders County Museum. Charles and June were blessed with the adoption of their first child, Randall Charles, in May 1956, followed by the adoption of their daughter, Mary Jane, in December 1960. Their greatest blessing was the birth of their grandchild, Brin Rose, in March 2006. Charles was a lifetime member Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Lions Club, Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Wahoo.
