BIO-Raymond Earl "Raym" Gibson was born and raised in Friend, Nebraska. Upon graduation from Friend High School, he entered the U.S. Army in 1938 at Fort Crook. Raym was later transferred to Fort Ord, California where he was a bugler. On August 1, 1940, Ray married Delores Marie "Dee" Larsen in Friend, Nebraska. After completing his term with the Army, war broke out and Raym eventually enlisted in the U.S Marine Corps. As a Marine, he was offered a position in the U.S. Marine Band, but he chose to serve overseas in the Pacific Theater. Raym was attached to the 3rd Marine Division and saw action in Guam and Iwo Jima. In combat he was a Corpsman with the 3rd Marine Division. He helplessly watched many of his buddies die in combat on Iwo Jima because he did not have the medicine or the help he needed to keep them alive when wounded. Although his discharge listed no wounds, Raym WAS wounded by shrapnel in his back on Iwo Jima. They called it pleurisy - probably between his ribs. The shrapnel was never removed from his back, and it never bothered him. The shrapnel was still in his back when he died. Both the Legion and disabled American Veterans eventually recognized his wound, awarding Raym the Purple Heart. After World War II ended, Raym joined the Navy Reserve. Because of this, Raym has the distinction of having been honorably discharged from the Army, Marines and Navy Reserve. After the war and into his retirement, Raym became involved with the American Legion Post 3, Unit 3, Lincoln, Nebraska, serving in a variety of roles, including Post Commander. One of Raym's notable accomplishments was to establish the "Avenue of Flags" in Friend, Nebraska Andrew Cemetery each Memorial Day in observance of those who served. Raym was a Campus Police Officer for Nebraska University for 16 years and received many awards. Raym Gibson's obituary read: "Raym was a devoted husband, a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He died of a weak heart; but this is not to say that it was a faint heart. He possessed a sentimental heart and he loved others easily." He showed his love in many ways - 1) loyalty to family, 2) comradely to his friends, 3) patriotism to his Country, 4) caring for others as a volunteer, and 5) his love of God.
