Bio
Mattie Falkner Griffin, 94, died Saturday in her daughter's home. Services were held this morning at Greer Funeral Home Chapel in Mangum. The Rev. Gary Bradley of Lawton will officiate. Burial was to follow at the Plainview Cemetery in jester. Arrangements are with Greer Funeral Home in Mangum. She was born Nov. 16, 1908 to Andrew Jackson Falkner and Iola Banes Falkner in the Plainview community, Jester. She grew up on the farm here she was born and attended Plainview school. She was on the basketball team during high school and played on the outsiders team later. She was a member of the Baptist Church and Farm Women's Club. In 1947, she moved to Chickasha and started working for Singer Sewing Machine Company. She later moved to Odessa, Texas, then to Amarillo where she retired with 30 years services with Singer company. In 1977, she moved to Bowie, Texas and started working for Wal-Mart. While in Bowie she was voted "Bi-Centennial Queen" on Jim Bowie Day. After retiring again at the age of 80 from Wal-Mart, she accepted a house keeping job in the Fort Cobb Lake area and worked another ten years. When she was 90 she moved to St. Jo, Texas to live with her daughter. She kept busy sewing, embroidering, crocheting until the last few days of her life. She is survived by daughter Linda and son-in-law, Don Reed of Saint Jo, grandson Dustin Mayfield of Denton, Texas; granddaughters Mindy Hobbs of Denton and Melissa Reed, Paris, Texas; sister Edna Begert, Pampa, Texas and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Howard Griffin; six brothers, two sisters and a special friend, George Elliott.
