MY 1ST COUSIN 3 X REMOVED 1ST WIFE CORA NOBLE (D) 1890 2ND WIFE DELLA MAE From, OUR HERITAGE, The History of the Longview Church Of God. In the early stages of the Church, A. J. Bradford (known to most as Uncle Bud) lived next door to the Church. He took the responsibility of seeing that all was in order. Each week he swept the plain wood floor before the services. In the winter, he built a fire in the old wood burning stove to warm the room. He cleaned out the ashes after each use so the stove would be ready for the next use. He wasn’t officially called an usher –they didn’t have offering plates-but he passed a hat around at each service to take up the offering. In the days before electricity for rural area, he brought Aladdin Lamps and kept them trimmed, filled, and burning for each service. He was the unofficial, unpaid, custodian and no one remembers ever hearing him complain. The people probably took for granted that the room would be clean, warm, and well-lit when they arrived for services. The old song from yesteryear ”The Old Lamplighter” would have been appropriate for him. One of those old Lamps is on display in the Narthex of the present building. Printed 1999
