"I write this not from my own memories, but from the memories of my mother-in-law about Johnnie Edmond King Raper Sealy. My mother-in-law's [Gladys Marie Reagan] second husband and the father of my husband, was Travis Edmond Raper. Travis' middle name actually comes from his grandmother. Most of the time people think Johnnie Edmond King has to be a male, Johnnie for a girl maybe, but never Edmond, right? The story goes that Johnnie's father, Joseph Underwood King really wanted a boy and was determined to give the baby a boy's name, regardless of the sex. I've been told that Johnnie loved to play dominos and if you agreed to play with her, you'd not get away very easily, which was just as well for my mother-in-law [Gladys Marie Reagan] because she loved the old stories. Johnnie lived near her son Oscar, in his "back yard" my mother-in-law said; I don't know if she meant that literally. Johnnie said she married William Harley Raper because they were "madly in love." When he passed away in 1933 at the age of 48 (pnemonia? sp?), he left her alone with four children ages about 16, 11, 9 and 6. I'm told that was when she moved to west Texas (or she may have already been there). Anyway, she ended up living in a Tent. I've heard she lived in a field and I've heard she lived in Grandpa Sealy's [William Dave Sealy] front yard, I don't know which is right, but she did live in a tent with her 4 kids for an undetermined amount of time. She worked as a maid for Grandpa[William Dave] Sealy who was a widower with children living at home. I don't know how long this arrangement lasted, but Johnnie said that he suggested they just get married as they were both alone and they needed each other. She said she married for love the first time and out of necessity the second time. Johnnie went on to say that she grew to love Granpa Sealy as much as she loved Harley. Granny [Johnnie Edmond] Sealy also must have vividly remembered the twins that passed away too early as she made her daughter-in-law, [Gladys Marie Reagan Raper], promise to name her first two daughters Sarilda & Arenda. Gladys only had one daughter so she only managed a Sarilda, but the same pressure was put on Sarilda and after two sons, Sarilda managed to have an Arenda, so the promise was kept.- Stories passed down and about Johnnie Edmond King Raper Sealy." written by geistmn. originally shared this on 10 Apr 2009 Thank you. Dana Meeks Joseph Underwood King was my 2nd great grandfather.
