Marilyn Jean (Cain) Semrad, 88 years, of Fremont, NE passed away Saturday, February 4, 2012 at Nye Legacy Health and Rehabilitation Center in Fremont. She was born November 19, 1923 in Fremont, NE; the only child of Ulysses Stanley (U.S.) Cain, Jr. and Harriett Eddy Cain. She was a 5th generation Fremont native; the granddaughter of Albert J. (A.J.) Eddy and Edith ("Edie") Turner Eddy; and the great granddaughter of Thomas M. and Lucy Ellen (Hughes) Turner. After the death of his father near Boston, Thomas M. Turner came to Fremont in 1856 with his mother, Margaret Turner and other siblings from Needham, MA, via covered wagon; originally seeking the gold fields of Colorado. After being turned back by Indians near Kearney, they became one of Fremont's first families. Fremont had a population of 20 upon the Turner family arrival. Margaret Turner built the first hotel, the Valley House and livery stable on the northwest corner of 5th and Main Street in the early 1860's. Her late husband, Lt. John Turner was a hero in the War of 1812 and operated the first women's clothing factory near Boston. Thomas Turner operated a freight business between Fremont and the Black Hills, owned Turner Ranch (now Fremont Airport), drove sheep from Oregon to Fremont and was Dodge County Sheriff in the 1870's. He hosted Henry Ford at a national tractor show at Turner Ranch in 1916. A.J. Eddy owned and operated Eddy Brothers Department store on the southwest corner of 6th and Park Street; the largest department store between Chicago and Denver between the 1890's and 1927. He was on the Board of the First National Bank of Fremont and on the committee that brought Midland College to Fremont from Kansas. Edith Eddy was a well known opera singer performing regularly at the Love-Larson Opera House and at many regional events. Marilyn lived in Fremont her entire life with the exception of 2 years in St. Louis, MO. She attended Fremont Schools, graduating from Fremont Senior High School in 1941. She attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln with a major in music, a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and the Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity for Women. She was musical director and on the Council of Bethel 15, Jobs Daughters, taught private piano lessons for 62 years, retiring in mid 2011; and was choir director and organist for both the adult and children's choir at St. James Episcopal Church, retiring after 29 years. In 1970 she became accompanist for chorus and band at Fremont Jr. High School for 13 years, retiring in 1984, as well as accompanying many choir and band individuals and groups at various State music contests.
