For nearly thirty years Dr. Sloan was the beloved family physician for people living in Cass County. Robert F. Sloan was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, March 10, 1832. After attending Tulane University he came to Linden, Texas, where he enlisted in the Confederate Army in April 1862. He served in Company B, 18th Regiment Texas Infantry. J.M. Cameron and W.M. Northern, both of Linden, served in the same regiment. He was discharged May 1865 and returned to Linden where he married Annie E. Graham, daughter of General Charles Graham, on April 4, 1867. They had three daughters: Jenny, Willie and Madge. Dr. Sloan lived between Atlanta and Linden, with an office, from which he practiced in his own yard. The house is gone, the site, on the old Linden-Atlanta road near Johns Creek, is still recognizable by two beautiful magnolia trees which stood in front of the house. When someone was ill, a member of the patient's family would go for Dr. Sloan, who traveled horseback to the house. His three daughters would compete for the privilege of saddling up his horse. He was best known for his success in treating pneumonia for this patients, even extracting teeth in his office, since there was no available dentist at that time. He often had young men studying with him to become doctors. On the Doctor's birthday each year a big celebration was held, and all the neighbors were invited. For days before the occasion, all the servants as well as the members of the family, were busy baking and making ready. One of his hobbies was gardening, and he loved animals. Dr. Sloan contracted pneumonia while calling on a patient during particularly bad weather and died January 25, 1892. He was buried in the Center Grove Cemetery.
