Funeral services for Lee A. Hemmer, 81, of Norfolk, will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 2, 2012, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, in Norfolk. Reverend Daniel Andrews and Reverend Joe Hemmer will Con-celebrant. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery in Lindsay. Visitations will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, at St. Mary's Church. Home for Funerals is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Hemmer died January 28, 2012 at his home of Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS). Lee was born August 6, 1930, at Humphrey, to Albert and Antonette (Huettner) Hemmer. He was baptized, confirmed, and attended school at Sacred Heart Church in Cornlea, NE. Lee farmed with his father until entering the Army on January 23, 1952. He served in Korea for 13 months with the 23rd infantry and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant on December 19, 1953. He received a Korean Service medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Combat Infantry Badge. On April 1, 2004 he was honored at the U.S. Pentagon for his service in the Korean War. Lee married Elda Herchenbach on May 5, 1954 at St Bernard Church rural Lindsay, NE. After their marriage Lee continued to farm and raise livestock. He was a member of Holy Family Church in Lindsay for many years. Lee was very active in his church, in the choir, and served as parish trustee. He belonged to a local neighborhood card club for many years. In 1985, he retired from farming due to health reasons and moved to Norfolk. He worked for the Norfolk Public Schools for 12 years in maintenance and as a bus driver. The last few years one of his joys was driving the bus for the special needs students. He was a member of Sacred Heart Saint Mary's Parish in Norfolk. He was very active in the church as a member of the Bound for Glory Choir, helping put up the Christmas decorations, and had a holy hour of perpetual adoration. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Assembly 606, in Norfolk, helping with the annual fish fries, the remodeling of the KC hall, was an altar server at funeral masses, and also was a member of the American Legion in Norfolk. Lee had a lifelong love of fixing and repairing everything, including the St. Ben phone lines. He loved to travel and spend as much time with his family and friends. He also helped his sons on the farm for many years. Lee is survived by his wife, Elda of 57 years, daughters, Cindi (Terry) Oberhauser of Lindsay, Renee(Matt) Gronenthal of Norfolk, sons, Mike of Ankeny, IA; Dan(Cindy) of Albion, Dale(Mary) of Humphrey, and Brian of Kearney; brother, Fr Joe Hemmer of Kaltag, AK; sisters, Erna(Dick) Ternus of Humphrey, Pat Bierman of Rock Island, IL; Elaine(Don) Hamm of Centerville, IA; Carol Freudenburg of Madison; 21 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, parents in-law Pete and Angela Herchenbach, daughter in-law, Peg Hemmer, brothers, Floyd and Bill, sister, Beth Patrick, and great-granddaughters, Abby Hemmer and Katie Jo Gronenthal.
