John was born on a farm in Paragole, Arkansas. His mother died when he was 16. John graduated as valedictorian from his high school and went on to earn his Bachelor's degree from Arkansas State University in 1940. John was commissioned 2LT Artillery and served with the HQ Company, 307th FA Bn, 78th Division in the European theatre during WWII, where he was awarded the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit and Purple Heart. He later earned his Master's degree and went on to a distinguished 28 year career in the Army Defense Intelligence Agency where he was a leader in the computer application of intelligence for the U.S. Army. LTC Adams retired from the Army in 1968 after serving in such places as Japan, Turkey and Austria. In retirement, he and his wife traveled, played golf and fished. After losing his wife of 59 years, Adelle Lucy Adams, in 2005 he and his son, completed a variety of home improvement projects together.
