Bio

Thanks to contributor #47016781; Donald Edward Hiller died in the early morning hours of Wednesday December 21st, 2011 at Swedish Hospital from cascading complications. He was comforted by his dear friend and companion Ann Cooper, his son John, daughter Ann, and her fiancee Fred King. Don was born September 21, 1937 to Harry and Edna (Peck) Hiller in Bellwood, Nebraska and had two brothers, James (Jim) and Richard (Dick) and a sister Barbara (Barb). They lost Harry in 1947 to Lou Gehrig's Disease when Don was ten. Edna worked for the United States Postal Service to support the family. He attended the one-room schoolhouse through high school, worked the corn fields, pilfered watermelons from neighbors and played on the town traveling baseball team. He loved tinkering with his 1951 Chevy, and went on to enjoy "classic cars" with his son John. He never outgrew his sense of humor and mischief, often surprising people when it the quietly popped out. He graduated from Bellwood High School and went on to graduate from the University of Nebraska with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He married Linda Lou "Lin" Sorensen November 30th 1960. He was hired by Boeing over the phone and they moved to Seattle. They had two children, Ann Marie and John Paul. When Lin became ill in 2002 he lovingly cared for her through her illness and death. Don enjoyed his work and his coworkers; often playing bridge at lunch, and playing golf with the Rovers. He adapted to the changes in his field going from slide rules and typewriters to lasers, calculators and computers, retiring after 39 years. When the Seattle Mariners returned, Don became an optimistic fan and couldn't resist the temptation to join the organization as an usher. He loved sharing his enthusiasm and appreciation of baseball and even his daughter Ann began to understand that baseball has a lore of its own. He continued to golf with the Rovers, and kept up with his work group after retirement, always going to the First Tuesday lunches when he was in town. He loved being in Arizona with Ann Cooper and they eventually purchased a condo in Sun City. He became aSnowbird, not being able to completely leave the Pacific Northwest and spent many enjoyable winters and springs in Arizona picking grapefruit from their backyard and keeping an eye on the Mariners at Spring Training, visiting with Dick and Pat Hiller of Tucson, Jim and Eddie Hiller, Charla and Roger Wake his nephews, niece and their children in Arizona. He enjoyed it so much he was always trying to entice friends and relatives to come down and visit so he could share it with them. On these trips to and from Sun City he would visit John and his family in (Pokey) Pocatello, Idaho. He thoroughly enjoyed his grandkids Kathleen Ann Marie "Katie", Warren Michael "Dub" and Sarah Elizabeth. He loved to watch them in their thespian and athletic activities. Don and Ann Cooper took various trips and adventures. He truly enjoyed her company. He is preceded in death by his father and mother Harry and Edna Hiller and his wife Lin Hiller. He is survived by his siblings, Dick (Pat) Hiller, Jim (Edna) Hiller and Bard Trolfholz, his children Ann (her fiancee Fred King), John (Mary) and his grandchildren Katie, Warren and Sarah, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses who cared for Don, especially the staff at Swedish Hospital First Hill, for their comfort and care of both Don and his family. There will be a viewing at the Howden-Kennedy Funeral Home in West Seattle on Tuesday, December 27, from 5-7pm, and a funeral mass at Holy Rosary Church in West Seattle on Wednesday, December 28 at 10:30am with a short reception to follow at the Parish Center across the street. The internment will be at Holy Rood Cemetery at 1:30. Thanks to contributor #46798970; Burial Date: 12-28-2011
