Elaine Pauline Marilyn Bakken, 78, of La Crosse, passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at the Bethany Riverside Care Center. She was born in Westby on November 20, 1933 to Palmer and Erva (Bjorge) Bakken. Elaine was baptised and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Westby where she was a member of the choir and taught Sunday School. She graduated from Westby High School in 1951 and joined Trane Company as a cashier in October of that same year. She was last promoted to Manager of Payroll and retired on October 30, 1997. Elaine was very active in community affairs. She was Treasurer of WI division of National Secretaries Association, served as president for La Crosse Lutheran Hospital Junior Auxiliary and was also on the board of directors for the auxiliary. Elaine also served as the area chairperson for the Western District auxiliaries, was on the board of the WI Hospital Association, and served as secretary of the La Crosse Southside Lioness Club where she was the recipient of the 1979 Member of the year award. She also participated in Pills-a-Poppin and was on the board for Causeway, a neighborhood volunteer program for Bethany Lutheran Homes. In addition, Elaine was the former president of the Lutheran Hospital Building Trustees and Vice Chair of the Lutheran Health System, and was a volunteer at the hospitals gift shop, flower mart, Coronary Care Unit and same day surgery unit. She also assisted with communion at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She is survived by her cousin, Hjordis Helgestad. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 420 West Avenue S. La Crosse. The Reverend Tom Meyer will officiate and burial will be in the Our Saviors Cemetery in Westby, WI. Friends may visit with the family on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation or St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The family wishes to thank all the staff of Bethany Riverside who took such good care of Elaine during her stay at the care center.
