Claude Arlington "Pat" Decker Jr., 79, of Kirtland, died on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012, in Kirtland. He was born Feb. 5, 1932, in Denver, Co., the son of Claude A. Decker Sr. and Sallie Palmer. He grew up ranching with his father, trail driving the cattle to Colorado in the summer and back to New Mexico in the winter. Pat was a member of Farmington High School's Class of 1951. Right before graduation he was called to active duty during the Korean conflict and his parents accepted his diploma. He was a proud Veteran who served in the New Mexico National Guard for several years. After his service in the military, he went to work for El Paso Natural Gas Company. After 30 years with El Paso, he retired and then worked for Western Gas Company for another ten years. Unable to stay retired, he worked for the funeral home in Kirtland for the next five years and made many friends on the reservation. He enjoyed working and was an inspiration to his children for his work ethics. He was quite an accomplished musician, playing by ear and a true music lover, mostly Country Western. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ramona Campbell, and sons, Gary Decker and Dean Decker. Pat is survived by his wife, Kennye McDaniel; one sister, Marie (Charles) Lake of Utah, sons, Dan (Shawna) Decker and Michael (Rita) Decker, both of Kirtland; stepsons, Wayne (Carrie) Peterson of Oregon, and Tim (Rhonda) Peterson of Albuquerque; stepdaughter, Kelly (Mike) Murray of Farmington; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, at Cope Memorial Kirtland Chapel, 458 County Road 6100 in Kirtland. Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Kirtland-Fruitland Cemetery, with Bishop Ron Goimaric conducting. Full military honors will be provided by VFW Post No. 2182 of Farmington. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the organization or charity of choice . Pat's arrangements are with Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute St. in Farmington, 505-325-8688. Published in Farmington Daily Times from January 12 to January 13, 2012
