From: The Commander in Chief, A. E. F. To: The Adjutant General, U. S. Army January 15, 1919. The Commander-in-Chief, in the name of the President, has awarded the Distinguished Service Cross to the following named officers and soldiers for the acts of extraordinary heroism set forth after their names: "SERGEANT JESSE A JAMES, Company "L", Fourth Infantry, [3rd "Rock of the Marne" Division] (AS No. 2339853). For extraordinary heroism in action Near Les Evaux, [Chierry], France, 13 JUL 1918. After many attempts to get patrols across the Marne had failed, Sergeant James alone swam the river, taking with him a wire, by which a boat containing two of his comrades [the boat had four passengers according to John Lewis Barkley's memoir] was drawn across, without attracting the attention of the enemy. Home Address: Mrs. Nannie Pettijohn (mother), Oakland, California.[Actually Oakland, Marshall County, Oklahoma] [The purpose of the mission was to capture an enemy soldier and return him across the Marne River to friendly lines so that he could be interrogated. There was an impending enemy offensive planned and information was badly needed. This ended up being the 2nd Battle of the Marne. It was a decisive turning point in WWI as it was the last of the enemy offensives. After this battle, the foe was so badly mauled that they were subsequently on the defensive until the end of fighting 11 NOV 1918]. Sgt. James was the mentor and constant companion of Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Corporal John Lewis Barkley, CMOH in WW I. Their exploits can be read in Barkley's Memoir, "No Hard Feelings" published in 1930 and available for free at: https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=inu.32000009944960&view=1up&seq=1 Contributor: John Milam (49603825) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oklahoma and Indian Territory, Dawes Census Cards for Five Civilized Tribes, 1898-1914 Name Jesse Albert James Gender Male Age 4 Father Name Charley James Mother Name Nannie James Census Card Number 5756 Dawes Enrollment Number 15947 Tribe Choctaw Enrollment Category By Blood Choctaw 5756 Choctaw 15947
