Robert E. Barkman, 86, of East Mattie Road, Breezewood, Pennsylvania, passed away on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at his home. He was born on April 13, 1925 in Everett, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Ernest Roy and Nellie Ethel (Snyder) Barkman. On August 18, 1945 in Cumberland, Maryland, he married Marcella B. (Baker) Barkman. She survives, along with the following children: Peggy married to Robert Nelson, Breezewood; Barry Barkman married to Brenda (Caro), Everett; Bill Barkman married to Nancy (Grove), Chambersburg; Eric Barkman married to Denise (Foor), Clearville; Nathan Barkman married to Paula (Wilt), Breezewood; and Lance Barkman married to Wendy (Dibert), Breezewood, and twenty grandchildren, two step¬-grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, John P. Barkman married to Guila, Everett, and a sister, Betty Henry, Everett. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sheryl Jean Barkman and a sister, Emma Grace Shriner. Bob was a graduate of Morrisons Cove High School Class of 1942 and was a member of the Cherry Lane Church of the Brethren. He, along with his sons, owned and operated Breezewood Farms from 1951 to current. He was often heard making the statement "I am very fortunate to spend a lifetime working an occupation that I enjoy." Bob was a member of the Pennsylvania Farmers Association, the National Rifle Association and the former National Farmers Organization. He previously served on the Board of Directors at the Everett Bank. He enjoyed deer hunting, reading novels, playing cards with his children and grandchildren, and his travels through the United States and Canada. Funeral Service will be held on Monday, January 2, 2012 at 11:30 A.M. in the Chapel at Akers Funeral Home, 299 Raystown Road, Everett with Pastor Eleanor Fix officiating. Friends may call at Akers Funeral Home, 299 Raystown Road, Everett on Monday, January 2, 2012 from 11:00 A.M. until the hour of service at the funeral home. Burial will be held at Ritchey Cemetery, Everett, PA. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Barkman to the Everett Free Library, 137 East Main Street, Everett, PA or the Bedford County Library, 240 South Wood Street, Bedford, PA 15522.
