Fort Bend Herald, July 22, 2009: Eugene Heimann was investigating a burglary when he was shot to death while on duty as a sheriff's deputy for the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office in 1988, Fort Bend County Judge Bob Hebert said Tuesday at the county commissioners meeting. Commissioners honored Heimann Tuesday by renaming a street in the Richmond area for Heimann, 33, who was shot and killed by a suspect outside Damon at the intersection of Texas 36 and FM 1462. The road bearing Heimann's name, Eugene Heimann Circle, lies within the 40-acre tract adjacent to Williams Way Boulevard at Hillcrest Drive and near Legion Drive in the city of Richmond (Precinct 1). "For the record, Eugene Heimann was the last deputy sheriff in Fort Bend County to be murdered while in the line of duty," said Hebert, who then explained some of the particulars of the crime. "We think it's appropriate that we name that circle so folks entering our justice academy and our justice center in the future will note that name and might ask a question and come to further realize the price that good folks pay in law enforcement protecting our way of life. So it's a way to honor Deputy Heimann and also all those who serve in uniform in Fort Bend County and elsewhere." On March 21, 1988, Heimann, while investigating a burglary, approached two men walking along a roadway and was shot and killed by Francisco Cardenas, a Mexican national. Cardenas was captured and later was given the death penalty, which was appealed and the sentenced changed. Heimann was born in East Bernard and graduated from Lamar Consolidated High School in 1972. Heimann was survived by his wife and two daughters.
