Herman Travis Strickland-obituary Wednesday, October 19, 1988 Laurel Leader Call (Laurel, Mississippi) page 2 Laurel Leader Call (Laurel, Mississippi) Wednesday, October 19, 1988 page 2 TRAVIS STRICKLAND Travis Strickland of Waynesboro died Oct. 16 of Forrest General Hospital after a brief illness. The funeral service was at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Freeman Funeral Home in Waynesboro, with burial in Lake Park Cemetery in Laurel. The Rev. Fred Chancellor and De Juan Walley officiated. A retired educator, he served as Wayne County’s school superintendent from 1948 until 1956. Under his administration, Wayne County became the first in Mississippi to provide daily transportation for students to a junior college. He served as a member of the board of trustees of Jones Junior College for 20 years and was a member of the Mississippi Education Association, the Wayne County Teachers Association, the Newton County Teachers Association, the National Association of School Administrators, the Red Red Rose, a Mississippi men’s educational fraternity, Phi Delta Kappa, and the Waynesboro Rotary Club. A charter member of the Waynesboro Lions Club and the Hickory Civitan Club, he was a Shriner and a member of First Baptist Church of Waynesboro. He is survived by his widow, Mary Pearl Strickland of Waynesboro; a sister, Robert Easterling of Hattiesburg; a niece and four nephews. Pallbearers were Wayne Easterling, Sherwin Easterling, Gary Strickland, G. C. Strickland, Bob Hardee, Robert Martin, Jimmy Waites and Alton Mason. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Thad Waite, Nolan Clark, Olen Evans, Freddie Strickland and Jack Johnson. Freeman Funeral Home in Waynesboro was in charge of arrangements.
