Oscar Samuel Schoettlin "Sam", 88, departed this life Sunday, August 14, 2011 of natural causes after a prolonged illness the past 3 years. Sam was born in Kansas City, Mo. on September 28, 1922 to Samuel Oscar Schoettlin and Loula Hackett Schoettlin. Sam grew up in Kansas City, MO. in his family home on Liberty Street. Upon his graduation from high school Sam attended technical school completing a radio operator license. He worked as a radio operator testing bombers bound for WWII before being drafted into the US Army in 1944. He served honorably in Europe from 1944 - 46. He was a radio operator during the Battle of the Bulge and served in occupied Germany until his honorable discharge in 1946. Following his discharge from the Army and looking for more adventure he moved to Alaska as a radio operator for a cargo airline operating along the Alaskan pipeline. After 2 years stationed out of Fairbanks and looking for a warmer climate Sam chose to relocate to Houston to work as a dispatcher for Trans Texas Airlines and Texas International Airlines. Sam married and had 4 children before retiring from Continental Airlines after 30+ years. Next to his family, Sam's passions included Astros baseball, fishing Toledo Bend and Lake Livingston, playing golf, traveling with his beloved Elsie, following various sports events from the comfort of his favorite chair, an amateur meteorologist, and staying informed of world news as an avid newspaper reader and news channel junkie. Sam is survived by his daughter, Cathy West and husband Wade West of San Antonio, son Coby Schoettlin and wife Holly of Humble, son, Tom Schoettlin of Conroe and daughter, Tara Schoettlin of Houston; grandchildren, Troy Becknell, Trey West, Taylor West, Shay Schoettlin, Shelby Schoettlin, Coby Schoettlin Jr., Cami Schoettlin, Jeffrey Schoettlin, and Colin Schoettlin; and 5 great-grandchildren.
