Rose J. Mikeska passed away Sunday, December 18, 2011 at the age of 91. She was born in Houston, Texas on April 12, 1920, to first generation Czech-Americans, John and Frances (Zelik) Bily. Rose left school at an early age to stay home and attend to her mother, and later became a registered florist at the family nursery business. At the conclusion of World War II, Rose married Victor R. Mikeska. She worked for Randall's Grocery and retired from there as a designer in the Floral Department. She enjoyed designing flower arrangements and bouquets. Rose was also very creative and talented as a cake decorator and was often asked to use her talents making cakes for friends and relatives. Rose was a member of the Houston Brethren Church, Sokol Houston, SPJST (lodge 88) and the WLFA. Rose was proud of her Czech heritage and was known by her friends as being gentle, supportive of others, and has a great sense of humor. She loved her family and took much pride in her three children's accomplishment of finishing college. Rose is survived by her three children, David W. Mikeska and wife Barbara of Spring, Victor T. Mikeska of Austin, and Annette Kelarek and husband Chris of Austin. She had five wonderful grandchildren including Lucas Mikeska of Houston, Emily Mikeska of Plano, Kathryn Mikeska of San Antonio, Bethany Kelarek and Mikaela Kelarek of Austin, who will all miss her very much. The family would like to thank Nadine Robertson for her devotion and care of their mother and grandmother. A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Heights Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service beginning at 7:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held on Friday, December 23, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Houston National Cemetery.
