Erasmus Bunyan Magee was born in Emory, Texas on 31 Jan 1898 and died on 27 Dec 1945... at least according to his tombstone at Magee-McCord Cemetery. Although etched in stone, it might not be correct! His Find A Grave has a picture of the tombstone showing that he was born on 31 Jan 1898. That birth date would seem to be corroborated by the 1900 census, when he lived with his parents Erasmus "Raz" Seymour Magee and Mattie Lady Coffee in Rains County, Texas. The census states that "Bunyan Magee" was 2 years old, and born in Jan 1898 in Texas. His 1917 draft card in Rains, Texas, also confirms his birthdate as 31 Jan 1898. His death date is another story. His death certificate, issued in San Pedro, Los Angeles, California, states that his birth date was "31 Jan 1899 ." That date of birth is probably wrong, according to the other sources. Erasmus was a machinist at Consolidated Steel. His date of death was listed as " 28 Dec 1944 " and that is probably his correct death date, since it is signed by doctors. His parents names are both listed on his certificate, his widow was listed as "Carrie Magee," and it listed removal to "Emory Cemetery, Emory, Texas." Horace Magee was the informant. What happened between birth and death? On 11 Aug 1915 Erasmus married Lillie Belle Robertson in Hopkins, Texas. They had three daughters in Dallas, Texas: Lillie Jewell Magee (1919-1996) Finnia Faye Magee (1921-1992) Johnnie Maxine Magee (1924-2000) By 1930 the marriage between Erasmus and Lillie Belle was over. He lived in Houston with a brother-in-law and stated he was widowed. Actually, Lillie Belle was very much alive and she remarried a few years later. When the 1940 census rolled around, Erasmus had remarried, too. He was listed as Bunyan E. Magee in Harrison, Texas, and his wife was "Carrie Ella," a beautician. It was probably his job that took him to California, where he died in 1944.
