Hyams graduated from Natchitoches High School in 1946, and from Northwestern State University in 1955, majoring in Sociology. He began his career as an officer with the Probation and Parole Board in Natchitoches and Winn Parish, then with the Coordination and Development Council of Shreveport, and later served as Police Chief of Natchitoches for many years. A member of the Louisiana National Guard for most of his adult life, he was a full time employee at Camp Beauregard in Alexandria, retiring as a Colonel in 1989.
