Bio

Joe Picone, 92, of Brenham, passed away Saturday. Dec. 10, 2005 in Trinity Medical Center. Mr. Picone was born Nov. 4, 1913 in Lottie, La. to Joseph and Juanita Blanchard Picone. On Feb. 8, 1936, he married Almarie Beatrice Giesecke. Mr. Picone was active in the Brenham community where he was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and St. Peter's Men's Organization. As a member of VFW Post 7104, he served as commander and district commander of the organization. He is a Past Exhaulted Ruler of the Elks Lodge and former member of the Lions Club. In addition, he served as president of the Sons of Herman Lodge No. 6 and president of the Brenham Band Parents. At the time of his death, he was the oldest surviving retired fireman of the Brenham Fire Department. Mr. Picone was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Navy as a chief machinist mate. His various business interests included owning and operating Brenham Auto Supply, Picone Marine and Brenham Radiator Shop as well as stores in Bryan. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. Card playing and dominoes were other favorite activities. His loving family includes: Almarie Beatrice Giesecke Picone, wife of 69 years; son, Joe Al Picone and wife Merle of Brenham; daughter, Jo Lynn Smith and husband Pat of Austin; grandchildren, Kyle Picone of Austin, Kevin Picone and wife Stacy of Bedford, Tanya Thomas and husband Jarred of Round Rock and Brittni Smith of Austin; great-grandchildren, Landry Picone, Taylor Thomas and Jace Thomas; brother, James O. Picone and wife Bette of Winter Park, Fla.; sisters, Juanita Conlan of Sacramento, Calif. and Carrie Lee Green of Brevard, N.C.; sister-in-law, Mary Belle Crouch and husband Charles of Brenham; and sister-in-law, Ora Nell Picone of Missouri City. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. His parents and one brother, Arthur Picone, preceded him in death. The family received friends Tuesday, Dec. 13 at Brenham Memorial Chapel. The funeral service was scheduled for today at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Cecilia Smith officiating. Interment followed at Prairie Lea Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kyle Picone, Kevin Picone, Pat Smith, Jarred Thomas, Jason Dimitt, Herb Buntzel, Kenneth Schwenke and Emmett Morgan. Honorary pallbearers will be Earl Wiesepape, Melvin Kettler and Mr. Picone's card playing friends. Memorials may be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 2310 Airline Dr., Brenham, Texas 77833, the Texas Lions Camp, P.O. Box 247, Kerrville, Texas 78029-0247, or a charity of choice.
