She graduated in 1929 from Callaway High School and in 1933 from Nebraska Wesleyan University, Lincoln, NE, where she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. She taught English, History and Biology in several Nebraska schools until her marriage to James B. Sadler on July 10, 1938 in Trinidad, CO. Vera and Jim both enrolled in Crozer Seminary in Chester, PA, and they received BD degrees in 1941. Vera resumed her teaching career in Mt. Union, Pa from 1941 to 1945 while her husband was deployed overseas as an Army Air Force Chaplain. At the end of the war Europe, Vera joined Jim in Italy and Germany until his discharge. They then moved to Hatboro, PA where Jim was pastor in a Baptist Church while Vera again taught high school students. The couple came to Sioux Falls in 1961. Vera taught English at Washington High School, serving as chair of the English Department and sponsor for the school’s literary magazine. She received her master’s degree from Augustana College in 1965 and taught several summer school classes at Augustana College and Sioux Falls College in 1968-1971. In 1983 when Vera’s eyesight began to fail, she retired after twenty-two years of teaching at WHS. Shortly after the couple moved to Sioux Falls, they built one of the first homes in the Crestview area at 4312 S. Glenview Road and resided there for over forty years. Vera maintained extensive flower and vegetable gardens and generously shared her produce with friends. Vera was a member of First Congregational Church. Her husband died on December 22, 2002.
