NORMA LOU SVOBODA Norma Lou Svoboda, 78, of Audubon died Thursday, May 18, 2006, at Friendship Home in Audubon. Mass of the Christian burial was held this morning, Monday, May 22, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Audubon. Casket bearers were Mark Pischel, Todd Pischel, Jim Fritsche, Ken Zimmerman, Gilbert Harms and Tony Chambers. Burial was in St. Patrick Cemetery at Audubon. Kessler Funeral Home of Audubon was in charge of arrangements. A daughter of Arthur Claude Diez and Mary Tobola Diez Woodin, she was born April 23, 1928, at her parents' home in Verdigre, Knox County, Neb. She was baptized and confirmed at the Presbyterian church in North Bend, Neb. She attended Norm Bend Community Schools, graduating as salutatorian of the class of 1945 and member of the National Honor Society. She received an associate degree in bookkeeping from Commercial Extension at Omaha, Neb. She and Edmund Svoboda were married Feb. 9, 1948, she at the Presbyterian church in North Bend. Mrs. Svoboda was a homemaker when they resided at Prague, Jensen and Superior, Neb. She was a secretary at a high school and bookkeeper at an alfalfa mill, West Point (Neb.) Feed Products. The Svobodas moved to Aliceville, Ala., Winside, Neb., and then to Audubon in June 1978. They operated and where part owners of SH&P Alfalfa Mill in Audubon. They also owned an alfalfa mill at Avoca. Mrs. Svoboda was did accounting for both until they closed the business at Avoca in 1987 and Audubon in 1988. They retired, purchased a farm east of Audubon and fed livestock. Mrs. Svoboda cared for her mother, babysat her grandchildren and enjoyed gardening, baking, knitting and reading. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Catholic Women. Survivors include her husband, Edmund, of Audubon; three children: Steve Svoboda and special friend Barb Baker of Fort Calhoun, Neb., Wayne Svoboda and wife Bonnie of Lincoln, Neb., and Bryan Svoboda and wife Patty of Manistee, Mich.; five grandchildren: Kristen Alley and husband Roger of Warrensburg, Mo., Nathan Svoboda of Manistee, Mich., and James, Jesse and Mary Svoboda of Audubon; a great-grandson; a brother, Frank Diez, and wife Doris of Mount Airy, Md.; and a brother- in-law, Arden Svoboda, and wife Erma of Coralville. Mrs. Svoboda was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter-in-law, Shirley (Harstick)Svoboda.
