This is to introduce you to a couple who has been married 69 years and their life history is indeed an interesting one, says Sandra Cole from the office of Council on Aging here at Marksville. Mr. Antoine Charrier is now 91 years old and Mrs. Charrier the former Vilmese Frederick, is now 87. They reside at Bodoc, RFD, Plaucheville. And they are very busy people. Mr. Charrier has a vegetable garden from which they produce all the vegetables needed. As proof, the pantry was opened for inspection and guess what! Seventy quarts and fifty pints of various vegetables and fruits were lined up neatly on the shelves. There was a supply of Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes, and onions in boxes and Mr. Charrier quickly reassured there were many of the same in his barn. The couple's freezer is filled with frozen foods which they produced. They pointed with pride to the small plot used as the garden and reminded that thru careful planning, cultivation and care, plus crop rotation, much could be produced from a small plot. The garden is ready at present for fall planting when the rain comes. The flowers and shrubs in the yard also have their share of attention. This couple is remarkable for their helpfulness and sharing with each other. Both are very cooperative in home chores and are most unselfish. In other words, there is found a display of excellent team work and harmony. The past was of necessity delved into Mr. Charrier emphasized the fact that while both were limited in their command of the English language they had no schooling, they learned their own through acquaintances, friends and children '13 of them' the necessary arithmetic and fundamentals for a good life on the farm. Mr. Charrier took pride in mentioning the fact that there were 13 children born –five boys and eight girls; today seven are living. Mrs. Charrier reassured there were many grandchildren; she could not give the exact number, but she claims there are 14 of the third generation. Mr. Charrier emphasized that his father could not provide the children with any book knowledge but they were taught to work. Each boy of the family was trained to save and at the age of 18 each was expected to buy a plot of land as his own to settle on. Mr. Charrier's leadership in Nugent, a small rural community where he lived, offered his services in building the first school house. Six patrons through the advice of Supt. V. I. Roy in 1912 donated the site and built a one room school house with a mud plastered fire place. His first three children started school together that fall and as well as he could remember the school sessions were from three to six months. These people are happy, says Sandra Cole. There was at no time mention of sickness, pain or hard luck. Just this year Mr. Charrier stopped driving his car. Most of their leisure time is spent visiting the ‘aged,' the sick friends and relatives. The gentleman said, ‘Our reservations are at the nursing home when we will be old.' - - - - - - - - - - - - 1910 UNITED STATES FEDERAL CENSUS REPORT Name: Antonina Chanin [Antonine Charrier] [Antoine Charrier] Age in 1910: 32 Birth Year: 1878 Birthplace: Louisiana Home in 1910: Police Jury Ward 8, Avoyelles, Louisiana Race: White Relation to Head of House: Head [Self (Head)] Marital Status: Married Spouse's Name: Voldmios Chanin Father's Birthplace: Louisiana Mother's Birthplace: Louisiana Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Antonina Chanin 32 - Head of Household Voldmios Chanin 28 - Wife Cecile Chanin 9 - Daughter Celina Chanin 7 - Daughter Marceline Chanin 5 - Daughter Corrine Chanin 3 - Daughter Clifton Chanin 2 - Son Lena Chanin 3/12 - Daughter 1920 UNITED STATES FEDERAL CENSUS REPORT Name: Antoine Charrier Age: 42 Birth Year: abt 1878 Birthplace: Louisiana Home in 1920: Plaucheville, Avoyelles, Louisiana Race: White Gender: Male Relation to Head of House: Head Marital Status: Married Spouse's Name: Velouis Charrier Father's Birthplace: Louisiana Mother's Birthplace: Louisiana Home Owned: Own Able to Read: No Able to Write: No Household Members: Name Age Antoine Charrier 42 - Head of Household Velouis Charrier 37 - Wife Celina Charrier 17 - Daughter Marceline Charrier 15 - Daughter Corine Charrier 13 - Daughter Chilton Charrier 12 - Son Lena Charrier 9 - Daughter Marylou Charrier 3 0 Daughter Cecil Charrier 1 1/12 Daughter - - - - - - - - - - - -
