James F. "Jim" Smith, 85, of Rapid City, died on Wed., Nov. 23, 2011 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. James Franklin Smith was born on Feb. 18, 1926 at St. John's Hospital in Rapid City to Ernest and Eunice (Carey) Smith. Jim served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from June 30, 1944 until his honorable discharge on March 10, 1946. While serving, he was united in marriage to Agatha Tuscher on Oct. 10, 1944. He worked for A.Y. McDonald and Northwest Pipe Fittings, both of Rapid City, and retired from the Westside Safeway in Rapid City after many years of employment there. He enjoyed being a member of the Hermosa Roping Club. Jim is survived by his wife, Agatha Smith of Rapid City; his daughter, Judy (John) Pesicka of Rapid City; his brother, Leo Smith of Bennett, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Glenn. A rosary service and visitation will begin at 7 pm on Monday, Nov. 28, 2011 at Our Ladies Chapel at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rapid City. Mass of Christian Burial is set for 1:30 pm on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Our Ladies Chapel with Father Ed Vanorny as celebrant. Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Rapid City with military honors by VFW Post 1273 and the SD Army National Guard. A memorial has been established.
