Joseph W. Tragnitz, 62, general master mechanic in charge of Illinois Central Railroad motive power in the Chicago area, died suddenly Thursday night, March 29. Chicago services were held Monday from Cocoran's Funeral Home. Interment was made in Ava, IL. Mr. Tragnitz was a native Blue Islander. He began his Illinois Central career in 1923 as a machinist at Burnside Shop and Markham Yard in Chicago. In 1938 he was on leave absence to become general chairman of the International Association of Machinists. He returned to the Illinois Central in 1941 as shop foreman at Markham Yard after serving as general foreman at Carbondale, IL and Waterloo, IA. He became assistant master mechanic at Vicksburg, MS in January 1950 and general master mechanic at Chicago in November of that year which latter position he held at the time of his death. Mr. Tragnitz was the husband of Ruth H. (nee Husband), brother of Mrs. Clara Driscoll of Chicago, Mrs. Gertrude Bella of Blue Island, Mrs. Mary Proctor and Mrs. Phyllis Ford, also of Chicago, and Arthur L. Tragnitz of Markham. He was a member of Blue Island Post 50 American Legion Volture No. 516 40 & 8 and the Carbondale (IL) BPO Elks Lodge. He was also past Grand Knight of Blue Island Council Knights of Columbus.
