Bio

Grace E. Janssen, 92, of Waverly, Iowa, and formerly of Gaylord, Minnesota, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Waverly, from natural causes. She was born on December 4, 1909, near Beaver Crossing, Nebraska, the daughter of Chris and Emma (Miller) Reil. Her family moved to Pomeroy, Iowa, when Grace was eleven years old. On January 4, 1934, she was united in marriage to Arthur Janssen in Pomeroy, and in 1948, they moved to a farm five miles southwest of Gaylord, Minnesota. Art died in 1975 and Grace continued to live in Gaylord until 1995 when she moved to Redwood Falls, Minnesota. On April 12, 2001, she moved to the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community where she had since made her home. Grace was active in the Altar Guild and Mission Society at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Gaylord. She enjoyed scrap quilting, providing many lovely quilts for her children and grandchildren. Crocheting was another hobby with crocheted and starched angels being one of her later projects. Her specialty in the kitchen was cinnamon rolls, and she made them whenever the family got together. She enjoyed playing cards and birthday get togethers with several groups over the years, and she very much enjoyed Sunfish fishing with her family at her son's cabin. The grandchildren referred to Grace as "superwomen". She is survived by her daughters, Shirley Koehn and her husband, Don, of Waverly, Iowa, Virginia Brandvold and her husband, Brent of St. Louis, Missouri; her son, Dale Janssen and his wife, Jeanne, of Fargo, North Dakota. Grace is also survived by seven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and nine great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Art; six brothers; and four sisters. Services were 2:00 pm on Friday, May 3, 202, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Gaylord, and burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Gaylord, Minnesota, or to Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Waverly, Iowa.
