Margaret Ann Hoelck, 75, of Grand Island died peacefully on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at Tiffany Square after a short illness with pancreatic and liver cancer. Margaret was born Feb. 27, 1936, in Grand Island to Lawrence and Margaret Bernt. Survivors are: husband, LeRoy C. Hoelck; daughter and son-in-law, Maureen and Randy Mendyk of Grand Island; son, Patrick Hoelck of Los Angeles; grandchildren, Anna, Ashley and Evan Mendyk; and many dear friends and family. Margaret grew up on the family farm and attended District 1 Elementary School and St. Mary's High School. Margaret attended college at Duchene in Omaha majoring in business. She worked as a legal secretary for Overland National Bank in Grand Island. On May 18, 1957, she married LeRoy C. Hoelck at Blessed Sacrament Church in Grand Island. Lee and Margaret moved to Denver for five years where Margaret worked as a legal secretary. They then moved to southern California for 28 years where she and Lee were self-employed in the retail business. In 1989, they returned to Grand Island to care for her father in his final stages of ALS. Margaret spent the rest of her life in Grand Island. Margaret was a charter member of the Serra Club and Blessed Sacrament Church. She belonged to the Catholic Daughters, the Sunset Club, and the African Violet Society of southern California. Margaret was the original extreme couponer (before it became popular) and was a lifetime patron of the arts attending various symphonies, concerts and Broadway shows. She traveled extensively with her family, and her favorite city was Dublin, Ireland. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents and her aunt, Claire. Burial was in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Island, NE. Published in The Grand Island Independent on November 23, 2011
