Havre Daily News (MT), 29 Dec 1989 City Business Leader Dies Havre--CLyde R. Thomas Sr, a prominent Havre businessman for more than 65 years, died suddenly at a Havre hospital, December 28, 1989, following a short illness. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 am Wednesday at the Holland & Bonine Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, where the Unified Veterans Council and the Elks will conduct graveside honors. Thomas was born September 26, 1908 in Britt, Iowa, to Charlie and Marie Ellen Trulson Thomas. He moved to Montana with his family in 1910 where they homesteaded at Fresno. There he assisted his father and uncle in establishing the First National Bank of Fresno and the Fresno Land and Cattle Company. He moved to Havre in the early 1930s and was a mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office for three years. In 1936 he opened the Shanty Motel and Restaurant and Clyde's In and Out Drive In, both successful businesses which were later sold. On June 14, 1943, he married the former Alice J. Lowe in Spokane. He was a World War II veteran having served with the 4134th Army Air Force Base Unit. From 1963 to 1967 he worked for the Army Corps of Engineers at the missile complex in Great Falls. Returning to Havre in 1967, he opened Western Trailer Sales and Western Realty, which he operated along with his wife and son up to the time of his death. He was a member of the Elks Lodge of Havre for 52 years and the American Legion for 46 years. Thomas is survived by his wife of Havre; a son, Clyde R. Thomas,Jr., of Havre; and two grandchildren.
