(Bill) Henderson Dies Early Today; Ill Three Months William D. (Bill) Henderson, 48, veteran member of the Greenville Fire Department, died in a hospital here at 2:15 o'clock this morning. Death came to the popular fireman after an illness of three months duration. Recently his condition thought to be improved, but several days ago a change was noted and he was moved to a hospital for treatment and observance. Final rites will be held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Funeral services will be hald at the Lee-st Methodist church conducted by the pastor, Rev. J.P. Fleming, assisted by Rev. J.G. Forrester. Burial will be in the Liberty cemetery. Pall bearers have been named as: Ed B. Williams, Charley Combs, Ollie York, Horace Hill, Elmer Fleener and C.H. Howell. Mr. Henderson has been connected with the Greenville Fire Department for seventeen years and was recognized as one of the most efficient men in the service. At the time of his death he was a member of the West Hill department and for a number of years had served as driver of a chemical truck. Efficient Fireman In his capacity as fireman Mr. Henderson had rendered an outstanding service and had many times given conclusive proof of the ability and efficiency. He was calm and collected during even the most critical moments of disastrous fires, was a hard and willing worker and at no time did he shirk his duty. He had often risked his life in carrying out his duties and he modestly shunned the praise that came his way for performing deeds of bravery in connection with the conduct of his duties as a fireman. Mr. Henderson was born in Alabama on Dec. 12, 1887, but had long been a resident of Texas and this section. He was widely known throughout the county and had the admiration of a large cirlce of friends who were today lauding his many fine traits and joining members of the bereaved family in mourning his passing. Had Many Virtues The virtues of Bill Henderson were many. He was a man of quiet and unassuming nature, yet he always maintained a cheerful attitude and had nothing to say but something good concerning his fellowman, it being his belief tht unless praise could be given, it was best to say nothing. He walked the path ways of life in an upright, righteous manner, performing kind deeds wherever he could, helping his friends and strangers alike and daily he gave example of his good citizenship. Among the many fine traits exemplified by Mr. Henderson was his unselfish devotion to members of his family. He was willing to make any sacrifice necessary for their welfare, and his love and devotion was returned by them. So it was where his friends were concerned for he valued the friendships he had accumulated as moung the brightest jewels of his possessions and it could be truly said that he considered every person he knew as his friend, he had no enemies. Member Methodist Church Mr. Henderson was a Chritian citizen. Long ago he professed religious faith and united with the Methodist church at the time of his death he was a faithful member of the Lee-st Methodist church and had been deeply interested in its progress. The Christian deeds that he had performed before death relieved his sufferings was evidence of his faith in the Master and his value to Christianity. Although he had undergone great suffering during the past few months, Mr. Henderson never complained but accepted the pangs of illness with his admirable fortitude and was at all times anxious to relieve members of his family and friends of worry concerning his condition. In his passing Greenville and Hunt-co in general, loses a noble citizen who will be greatly missed. Surviving Mr. Henderson are his wife, Mrs. Lena Denson Henderson, and three children, Mrs. Merle Dugan, J.W. Henderson and Billie Henderson, all of Greenville. Also surviving are two grandchildren, four sisters and two brothers, Mrs. J.H. Keely of Gilmer, Mrs. A.E. Gauntt of Greenville, Mrs. J.T. Castleberry of Gladewater, Mrs. Floyd Perkins of Maud, Oklahoma, John Henderson and Ed Henderson of Gladewater. Greenville Evening Banner, Tue, 3 Mar 1936, page 8, Rites Held for W.D. Henderson Final rites were observed at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon for William D. (Bill) Henderson, member of the Greenville fire department who died here Monday morning following an illness of three months duration. Services were held at Lee Street Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J.P. Fleming, assisted by Rev. J.G. Forrester. Burial was in the Liberty cemetery northeast of Greenville. Pall bearers were Ed B. Williams, Charlie Combs, Ollie Yost, Horace Hill, Elmer Fleener and C.H. Howell.
