Joe Louis Kitten died Nov. 7, 2011, at the age of 83. He was born May 30, 1928, to Joe and Laura Kitten. After a lengthy illness, he passed away on the farm his parents moved to in 1912 as newlyweds, and where he was born and lived his entire life. Visitation will be held at Englunds Funeral Service today, Nov. 9, from 6 to 7 p.m. Rosary service will follow at 7:30 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at Slaton's St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Msgr. Curtis Halfmann officiating. Interment will follow in Englewood Cemetery. Joe served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was a cotton farmer. He married Loretta Steffens on June 18, 1957, and they had 54 beautiful years together. Joe believed every day should be lived with laughter and frequently said anything could be turned into fun. He had a strong work ethic and believed in service to his fellow man. He and Loretta were privileged to be Eucharistic ministers and served the homebound for many years. He was a frequent blood donor who donated a total of 16 gallons of blood during his lifetime. Joe delivered Meals on Wheels until he was nearly 80 years old. He had a gift for turning strangers into friends and never left a stranded motorist on the side of the road. At his request, his brain was donated for medical research for Parkinson's disease in hope that one day a cure is found. Joe was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, The Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Cooper's Lions Club and the Lubbock Cooper ISD Board of Trustees. He was preceded in death by his parents; a baby son, Joseph in 1965; and brothers, Edmond, Nestor, Othmar and J.B. He is survived by his beloved wife, Loretta; two daughters, Cassie Willett and husband Ron of Midland, and Connie Parham and husband Zach of Odem; four sons, Derek and wife Jane of Slaton, Lester and wife Nancy of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Dr. Todd and wife Libbey of Richmond, Va., and Scott of Manson, Iowa.
