Parents - Tom & Anna Krupa Kocurek ___________________________ When we think of Dime Box, we have to think of Mr. Lewis J. Kocurek, who always was a good civic leader and promoter of progress in anything that would be of betterment to the community. Lewis was born in Lee County on October 5, 1883, one of thirteen children born to Tom and Anna (Krupa) Kocurek. Five of the children died before reaching school age. Those who reached adulthood were: Joe I.; Jerome M.; Albina; Clara; George; Lydia; Lewis J.; and Tom, Jr. Lewis's grandfather, Martin Kocurek, Sr., and his wife, Katerina, and their four children: Mary; Martin, Jr.; Josef; and Frances emigrated from the village of Hovezed in "Okres Vsetin" in Moravia to the United States in 1855. They crossed the Atlantic on a sailship and landed in Galveston, Texas. It is believed their port of entry may have been New Orleans and that they traveled from there to Galveston on the Morgan Line sailship "St. Mary" or as they called it "Svata Maria." They made their way inland and settled on a farm in Fayette County near Fayetteville and Roznov near Warrenton. Three more children born: Anna, 1856; Tom, 1857; and John, 1859. Martin Kocurek died in the early 1880's and is buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Fayetteville. After his death, his wife, Katerina, made her home in Hranice with her son Tom and his wife, Anna, who had moved to this area about 1885. Katerina died in 1886 and was one of the first to be buried in the Hranice Community Cemetery. Lewis has been in Dime Box ever since there was a Dime Box, never once leaving, except to go to Giddings High School and Sam Houston State Normal in Huntsville. After graduation, he returned to Dime Box and taught school for several years. Lewis was the first postmaster in Dime Box. He helped organize the First State Bank of Dime Box in which he served as its president until his retirement in about 1969. Lewis and his wife had two daughters: Bernice, who married Walter Brendt; and Gloria, who married Red Allbright. His wife died in 1966. ------------------------- Submitted by Melanie Hester
