STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Longtime Staten Islander Charles Lester Minchew, 80, of Graniteville, a U.S. Army veteran, retired businessman and loving family man, died Thursday in Staten Island University Hospital, in Ocean Breeze. Born and raised in Brewton, Ala., Mr. Minchew was stationed at Miller Field during the 1950s when he was serving in the U.S. Army. While he was on the Island, he and Marie LaRocca met and fell in love, and the couple settled in Graniteville after their marriage. Mr. Minchew owned and operated Charmar Market in St. George for nearly four decades, from the late 1950s until 1991. He took great joy in spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Minchew was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In his leisure time, he enjoyed tending his vegetable garden and rooting for the New York Jets. Marie, his wife of 44 years, died in 1997. Surviving are his son, Charles; his daughters, Jamie Minchew and Frances Ray; three brothers, C.O., Robert and James, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be Monday from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Pity R.C. Church, Bulls Head. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
