Bio

Mary Elizabeth Rhea Starnes was born January 26, 1864, in Williamson Co., Texas, to Ezekiel Moses and Martha Ann (Campbell) Rhea. She married Judge William T. (Bill) Starnes December 24, 1884, in Williamson Co., Texas. They had 6 children: Judge Calvin Rhea Starnes, attorney and oil man in East Texas; Dr. Mert Hawkins Starnes, physician; Dr. William Love Starnes, retired army; Attorney Roy Wayne Starnes; Mary Beulah Starnes, teacher; and Ruth Elizabeth Starnes Welch. Mary Rhea Starnes lived to be 101 years old. She died January 1, 1965, and was buried in Lubbock City Cemetery, Lubbock Co., Texas. Her husband and her 2 daughters were buried in Oddfellow Cemetery in Georgetown, Texas. She was born, reared, married, and lived in Georgetown until the death of her husband, Judge W.T. Starnes. She taught school in Williamson Co., Texas, and went to Lubbock to live with her daughter, Miss Beulah Starnes, after her husband's death. Mary's father, the late E.M. Rhea of Georgetown, donated land to Southwestern University when it was being built, and the Starnes family was well affiliated with Southwestern, with five of the six children graduating from the institution, as well as Judge W.T. Starnes. The Starnes family financially assisted many other family members to attend college.
