Grand Island (Nebraska) Daily Independent Sunday, 9 April 1995 Helen A. Vavra, 85, of 2020 S. Adams died Friday, April 7, at her home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home with the Rev. Stanley Gorak officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Vavra was born June 27, 1909 to Joseph and Marie (Jarusek) Kosmata at Ord. She was educated at Ord and went to sewing school. She married George M. Vavra on July 1, 1926 at Ord. The couple lived in Ord following their marriage. In 1948, they purchased a sausage business from Otto Pecinka, which they owned and operated until 1953, when they moved to Grand Island and established a sausage manufacturing business known as Vavra's Sausage Kitchen. Mr. Vavra died in 1987 and Mrs. Vavra continued working as a bookkeeper in Vavra's Sausage Kitchen until 1993. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, traveling, tending flowers, doing yard work and caring for her dog. Mrs. Vavra is survived by a son, Marlowe Vavra of Grand Island; a daughter, Norma (Mrs. Lowell Spencer) of Grand Island and a grandson. She was preceded in death by four sisters.
