Bio

James Francis Struhall, age 80, better known all his life as Jamie, died peacefully in his sleep Friday, October 7, 2011, in Dallas, Texas, after a long and courageous struggle with cancer. He was born in Austin, Texas, March 18, 1931, to parents Dr. R.L. Struhall and Lillian Parma Struhall and was the fourth child in the family of eight children. After graduating from Austin High School, he attended Texas A&M University before enlisting in the United States Marine Corp. His military service during the Korean War was spent proudly serving on the aircraft carrier, USS ESSEX-CV9. Following this he returned to Austin and attended the University of Texas where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. In 1954 he went to Mexico to play football for The Mexico City College, known today as The University of the Americas. Jamie was past president of the South Austin Civic Club, member of the Southwest Football Officials Association, a former member of St. Ignatius Martyr Catholic Church, and a former Knights of Columbus 4th degree member. For many years he was in the home construction business until he went work for the City of Austin in 1980, retiring in 1996. He married Sharon Head Sentell on May 7, l971 and they were blessed and privileged to have celebrated their fortieth anniversary this year. Jamie had lived in Austin seventy-six years until they moved to Dallas in 2007 to be nearer to children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. R.L. Struhall, and a sister, Dolores Smith of Houston. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Struhall; two sons, James Struhall, Jr. of Bullard and Larry Struhall of Dallas; three daughters, Suzie Struhall of Houston, Katie Struhall of Jacksonville and Sally Brown of New Hampshire; three step-children, Holly Davis and husband Mike of Dallas, John Sentell and wife, Waylana of Lamesa, Erin Copley, and husband, Dr. Lawson Copley of Dallas; and ten grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers R.L. Struhall, and Al Struhall of Austin; four sisters, Grace Luck, Frances Davis, Ann Duffourc; and Janet Mullen, all of Austin; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the staff of The Plaza at Edgemere for their excellent care and support. The family is also deeply grateful to New Century Hospice for their kindness and dedicated caring of Jamie. Jamie donated his body to U.T. Southwestern Medical Center for medical study. A memorial will be scheduled at the Dallas Ft. Worth National Cemetery at a later date. We who loved, and were loved by Jamie, feel secure in the knowledge that God now holds Jamie in the palm of His hand. Published in Austin American-Statesman on October 13, 2011.
