Bio

REED, Gary Lee (Age 67) of Spokane, Washington, died, after a heroic battle with cancer, Friday, April 23, 2010, at home, surrounded by his family. He was born November 14, 1942, in Toledo, Washington, the youngest son of Archie and Agnes Reed. Gary worked much of his childhood, up to the age of 25 on the family dairy farm. He was a graduate of Toledo High School and served six years in the U.S. Army Reserves Gary married the "Love of his Life" and childhood sweetheart, Cherylyn "Cheri" Pankratz, on May 8th, 1965 in the Kelso Methodist Church. He spent several years as a builder, working for Northwest Homes of Chehalis and was then employed by Lewis County Government in several capacities, retiring in 1993, from his position of Lewis County Facilities and Maintenance Director, after 21 years. Gary was active in 4-H, FFA, Jaycees, Local, County, State and National Grange. In 1969, he and Cheri were named the "Most Outstanding Grange Young Couple" in the Nation, bringing honor as the first couple reigning from the State of Washington in 100 years. They traveled extensively throughout the Nation, for a year, promoting Grange and young couple involvement Gary was an avid fisherman, owning pleasure/fishing boats most of his adult life. From tent to motor home, camping and travel was a real source of enjoyment. Alaska was a favorite destination, especially trips accompanied by his fishing buddies. Hawaii and Palm Springs were also at the top of his list, enjoying annual return trips with family and dear friends. His building projects were many, including several of their homes. Restoration of antique trunks and golfing were both hobbies started after retirement. The mention of a card game always sparked his interest and even after leaving the Toledo area, he developed a new group of buddies in Spokane who enjoyed his antics in a good game of poker. He took special pride in Shelly and Doug's development of Liberty Lake Wine Cellars and enjoyed working in every phase, including tasting! Those who knew him well, knew his involvement with Cheri's work and interests was fourfold. Most of his married life was spent living in the Toledo area, moving to Spokane, WA in June of 2005, where he is survived by his spouse, Cheri; daughter and son-in-law, Shelly and Doug Smith and grandson, Joshua of Liberty Lake, WA; daughter and son-in-law, Garnet and Brad Davis, and grandchildren Braden and Gracelyn of Spokane, WA; Nephews, Richard Reed of Beaverton, OR, and Randy Reed of Mossyrock, WA, and many loved family members and friends throughout the nation. Gary was preceded in death by an infant daughter, his parents Agnes and Archie Reed, and brother, Kenneth. It would have been his desire to thank the medical professionals who helped him throughout his illness. Gary is greatly loved and will be missed by all who knew him. In the words of Cheri, "They broke the mold when they made Gary, he was one of a kind. I love you honey". [Spokesman-Review, The (Spokane, WA) - May 2, 2010]
