Russell J. Battiato, 89 years, of Fremont, NE, died Monday, October 10, 2011 at Shalimar Gardens in Fremont. He was born May 9, 1922 in Fremont, NE to John and Frances (Minardi) Battiato. He lived his entire life in Fremont. He graduated from Fremont High School in 1939 and then attended college for 2 years. He served in the U.S. Army September 26, 1942 to May 10, 1946 during World War II. Russell married Eloise Jean Hackstack August 23, 1950 in Fremont. She died April 19, 1981. He married Elnor (Edwards) Kirts October 7, 1983 at Verdigre, NE, she died October 1, 1989. Russell worked for his dad at Battiato Shoe Repair from 1946-1964. He was then a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for 20 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fremont, Knights of Columbus Council 1497, and a Life Member of V.F. W. Post #854 of Fremont. Russell was also a member of American Legion Post #20 of Fremont, Fraternal Order of Eagles #200 and the National Association of Letter Carriers. Survivors include: sons – David Battiato of Beatrice, NE, Paul Battiato of New York, NY and Donald and wife Judy McKinney of Louisville, NE; daughters – Ellen Moeller of Lincoln, NE, Sharon and husband Michael Taylor of Nickerson, NE, Judy and husband Jerry Nielsen of Fremont, NE and Faye and husband Jerry Reed of Tacoma, WA; daughter-in-law – Jacque Battiato of Lincoln, NE; brothers – John Battiato Jr. and wife Thelma of Indianapolis, IN and Father Ronald Battiato of Cedar Bluffs, NE; sister – Mary Fucinaro of Ralston, NE; sister-in-law Edna Battiato of Fremont, NE; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and special friend – Max Christensen of Fremont, NE He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 wives; brother, Charles Battiato; great granddaughter, Tiffany Push and brother-in-law, Don Fucinaro. Funeral Mass will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, October 14, 2011 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fremont. Father Ron Battiato and Father Dave Belt will officiate. Visitation will be 4-8 P.M. Thursday, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:00 P.M. Thursday at Moser Memorial Chapel, Fremont. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at church Friday. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Fremont with Military Honors conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of V.F.W. Post #854 and American Legion Post #20 of Fremont. Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick's Church General Endowment Fund.
